How to Bloom Where You’re Planted
With Taraji P. Henson, Founder of The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, and Dr. Vivid, Doctor of Clinical Psychology and Mental Health Advocate
The things you’re passionate about – like activism, sustainability, mental wellness and more – can be heavy topics, but it doesn’t mean that you’re any less motivated to make a change in the space. And, you’ll be able to make that difference, as long as you have a way to find joy in your journey.
This conversation with Taraji P. Henson will be moderated by Dr.Vivid, Doctor of Clinical Psychology, and focus on finding joy in your personal path. Together, they will share personal anecdotes and tips around enjoying the journey and keeping joy in the center of it, despite what challenges you may face during it. The result will be a great reminder that no matter where you are in your journey, or how or why you started, you can still bloom beautifully where you’re planted.
The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation and kate spade new york have teamed up to create more accessible mental health resources for women and girls, and together announced the launch of ‘SHECare Wellness Pods,’ a new multi-year initiative that aims to reach over 25,000 Black women on HBCU campuses with frontline mental wellness care.
This first-of-its kind program was concepted by actor, filmmaker and founder of The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, Taraji P. Henson, and Tracie Jade Jenkins, Executive Director of The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation. The first installment at Alabama State University, a public, historically Black university in Montgomery, Alabama, will kick off a series of SHECare Wellness Pods supported by kate spade new york.
Why Black Women?
Statistics show that 84.4% of Black women were primary, sole, or co-breadwinners, according to the Center of American Progress. In addition, Black women are faced with a myriad of health disparities, social injustices, and disparity of pay in the workplace. The gravity of these circumstances adds significant stressors to the mental health of women.
Black women are at least twice as likely to experience an episode of depression or anxiety as men, and yet compared to their white counterparts, they are only half as likely to seek treatment.
